Billings Food Bank
Not to be confused with a small pantry of canned and dry goods, the Billings Food Bank is a large scale warehouse of canned, dry and frozen food.  Largely the Billings Food Bank is a collector and distributor of food items to most all the aid agencies in the Billings, Laurel, and surrounding areas.  Such as:

Billings Food Bank
Senior Nutrition Program
2112 4th Avenue North, Billings, 59101
259-2856
Community Hope
13 Cedar Avenue, Laurel
628-7281
Family Services, Inc.
1824 1st Avenue North, Billings
259-2269
Gateway House
245-4472
Montana Rescue Mission
    Men's Shelter
    2822 Minnesota Avenue, Billings
    259-3800

    Women's & Family Shelter
     2520 1st Avenue North, Billings
     259-3105
St. Vincent De-Paul
2610 Montana Avenue, Billings
248-1411
Salvation Army
2100 6th Avenue North, Billings
245-4659

How it Works
  1. Cattlemen deliver slaughter cattle “Culls” or “Drys” to either Pays or B.L.S. Auction Yards in Billings, MT, where they will declare the cattle as donations to the Billings Food Bank Program.  They will leave the name, ranch name or corporation name, and address of who is to receive the charitable tax donation receipt from Billings Food Bank for $500 per adult animal.

  2. These cattle will be hauled to T-Bone Feeders in Sheppard and put on feed awaiting an open date at the slaughter house.

  3. Approximately half of the cattle will be slaughtered and processed into one pound packages of hamburger and/or cube steak depending on the grade of the carcass.

  4. Billings Food Bank will pick up frozen meat, store it in their large freezer area and distribute it to all of the aid agencies mentioned and their own Senior Nutrition Program (which currently is supplying food directly to over 1,700 residents that are 60+ and meet income guidelines.)

  5. Approximately half of the cattle donated will be resold for money to create the funding required to haul, feed, and slaughter the donated animals.  The reality is that much of the time it costs more to commercially process an animal than the animal is worth.  This way, the expenses of hauling, feeding, and processing the animals are covered by the resale of a portion of the donated cattle.  Ranches are keenly aware that even things “given” to you have expenses attached.  This campaign is 100% non-profit, however the expenses of getting the animals from “pasture” to “plate” need to be self perpetuating and this method will accomplish that.

  6. Your $500 per adult animal charitable donation receipt covers the worth of the animal as well as the trucking to get the animals to Pays or B.L.S.  Hopefully the tax donation will be more advantages to your ranch operation than the revenue of a few slaughter animals.  Knowing that your gift will result in quality, high protein meal for the need is priceless.

          Thank you.

An accurate accounting of animals donated and expenses paid will be kept and will always remain presentable for anyone wishing to see the figures.

  • Gary Dixon and Shirley Little, owners of G&S Transport (cell: 855-0605) for their willingness to transport donated cattle from the auction yards to the feedlot and slaughter house.

  • Project Meats in Sheppard (373-6315) and 4th Avenue Meats in Billings (252-5686) for their longtime support of the Billings Food Bank with discounted rates for processing, etc.

  • The Agri-News in Billings (259-5406) for their consideration on advertising.

  • Skip's Critter Cutting (348-2309) for their generous "free slaughter offer" prior to their cut and wrap processing.

Sponsors.  We can always use additional sponsors to help pay the expenses of the hauling, feeding, and processing of donated animals.  This would allow for more donated animals to be slaughtered and less to be resold just to cover the expenses mentioned.

Note: Please call day prior to or day of sale that you are bringing in donation cattle giving us a heads-up that they are coming so we can watch for them and arrange the hauling from the yards.
